Overview of Some Recent EML Research in Russia

Abstract: The overview summarizes the main electromagnetic activities in Russia since the 12th Electromagnetic Launch Technology Symposium in 2004. This research has been focused on the development and improvement of electro-discharge launchers, railguns, and electrothermal-chemical (ETC) launchers. Research efforts have been directed toward studying the physical phenomena and processes limiting the attainment of high velocities and operational resources of launchers. Considerable attention has been paid to solving prob… Show more

“…The loading function along the direction of movement is defined in a form of the Heaviside step function if if (1) where represents pressure profile fixed to local coordinate , while represents the position of the load front (projectile) at time instant . It can be expressed as (2) where is the velocity of the projectile. Two types of transient loading are considered.…”

“…Experimental studies of a combined accelerator [1], [2] and electric-discharge launchers operating on hydrogen [3] have been continued at the Institute for Electrophysics and Electric Power, the Russian Academy of Sciences. The efforts are focused on both improving the performance of propulsion devices and studying the high-current pulsed discharge in the superdense gas medium in the discharge chamber of launchers.…”
