Overview of sub-terahertz communication and 300GHz CMOS transceivers

Abstract: A 44 GHz frequency band from 252 GHz to 296 GHz has been identified for communications. This frequency band is part of the 300 GHz band, which is expected to be utilized for ultra-high speed wireless communication toward 6G. In this letter, we will discuss the requirements for ultra-wideband wireless communications in the subterahertz range, including the 300 GHz band, and clarify the necessity of a communication system based on phased arrays. Finally, a 300 GHz CMOS wireless transceiver capable of transmittin… Show more

“…The level of maturity and cost efficiency of electronic technology make it the most reliable candidate with which to extend the range of wireless communications to sub-THz frequencies. The circuit design can be compact, which is beneficial for enduser devices, among other applications [1][2][3][4][5]. However, this technology is restricted by the limited bandwidth that its components can handle and the need for multiple circuits to cover different frequencies with adequate bandwidth for the application.…”

“…Frequencies up to 322 GHz have already been standardised by the IEEE 802.15.3d [20]. The IEEE802.15.3d standard allows different channel sizes to be used for different applications [5]. Figure 1 presents the channel allocation of different channel bandwidths according to the IEEE 802.15.3d, showing the frequency bands that this study tested at different modulations.…”

“…With the gradual decrease of the remaining spectrum, the spectrum of wireless communication is extending to terahertz band, which can support very large bit-rates in theory [1,2,3,4,5], and the terahertz communication system has become an important development direction for large-capacity communications in the future. The superheterodyne structure is usually adopted by the terahertz RF front-end, which can be used for short-distance chip-to-chip communication [6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13], and the mixer is indispensable no matter in the transmitter or the receiver.…”
