Overview of the Health Informatics Research Field: A Bibliometric Approach

Abstract: Abstract. Health informatics is a relatively new research area. Over the last decade or so, research in health information has been growing at a very rapid rate, as evidenced by the large number of publications. While this growth has been beneficial to the field, it has also made understanding the scope of the field more difficult. Consequently, it is difficult to answer questions such as how the research field has evolved over time, what the landmark publications are, what impact these publications have had, … Show more

“…Furthermore, based on the addresses of the corresponding authors in the included studies, we investigated the publication in each state in the USA and the most prolific institutions in the top three states. our result is consistent with other articles (Gu et al 2017;Liang 2010;Liao et al 2018), pointing out that Harvard University is the most productive institution in medical research. These results might provide a clue for scholars when they need to choose cooperative members.…”

“…Even though all subject areas showed positive evolution, the most remarkable growth was undergone by Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a finding that matches the results of a study carried out using the Science Citation Index Expanded database (Fu et al 2011). Also noteworthy is the evolution of Health Informatics, a new research area whose rapid growth has likewise been documented previously (Liang 2010). The considerable growth of Health Policy appears to signal advanced results owing to the availability of funding; yet the capacity to carry out research at the local level has evolved much more slowly, especially in countries with limited economic resources, where research in this area is particularly needed (Adam et al 2011).…”
