Overview of the Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia

Abstract: ObjectiveDue to an unprecedented rate of population aging, South Korea is facing a dementia epidemic. For this reason, the Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia (KLOSCAD) was launched in 2009 with support from the Korean Health Industry Development Institute to investigate the epidemiology, biopsychosocial risk factors, and outcomes of dementia and dementia-related conditions. “…South Korea became an aged society in 2017, when more than 14% of the population was aged 65 years or older, and it is projected to become a postaged society by 2025, when 20% of the population will be older than 65 years. 51 The number of dementia patients is increasing rapidly along with this unprecedented rate of population aging in South Korea. We aim to address this situation by developing a multidomain intervention program that will be easy to disseminate to large numbers of older people nationwide.…”

We enrolled 38 age- and sex-matched cognitively normal controls from the participants of the Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia (KLOSCAD), which is a nationwide population-based prospective cohort study on cognitive aging and dementia launched in 2009 [21]. The characteristics of the subjects are summarized in Table 1.…”
