Overview of ultrasonic shot peening

Abstract: Ultrasonic shot peening (USP) is acknowledged as an effective surface treatment method to enhance the mechanical performance of materials by inducing compressive residual stress in solid metals and alloys. This article overviews recent researches from our group at Purdue University on the USP in the aspects of modelling the kinetics of the shots, predicting the surface topography of the peened samples and producing the nanostructured grains on the solid metals and alloys. Research results suggest that finite e… Show more

“…Ultrasonic needle peening is a special case of shot peening. Here, instead of using the traditional spheres to hit the part and induce compressive residual [1,12] stresses at the surface of the component, oscillating cylindrical bars in the ultrasonic range (over 18 kHz) are employed [30]. This operation stretches plastically the area where is applied and, in order to counterbalance this effect, it produces an S-shape residual stress profile starting with a compressive layer followed by a tension zone underneath, as represented in Figure 5d [23].…”

“…In recent times, ultrasonic shot peening (USP) 171 came into existence to enhance the durability of in-service parts of various materials. 172178 USP is different from shot peening where compressed air actuates the shot, and the shot is energized at an ultrasonic frequency by a sonotrode vibrator.…”

“…Due to modern technical challenges either the implementation of new technologies or materials in modern hightech manufacturing requires the solution of important problems of assessing the strength of the materials being processed. This is especially important for finishing technology of shock-wave treatment, such as ultrasonic hardening [1] or finishing by detonating gas mixtures (thermal deburring) [2], using the energy of heat flows, including high intensity. And here it is very important not only to accurately determine the operating heat fluxes [3], but also the ability of materials to perceive such heat loads.…”
