Overview on the history of organofluorine chemistry from the viewpoint of material industry

Abstract: Fluorine (from “le fluor”, meaning “to flow”) is a second row element of Group 17 in the periodic table. When bound to carbon it forms the strongest bond in organic chemistry to give organofluorine compounds. The scientific field treating them, organofluorine chemistry, started before elemental fluorine itself was isolated. Applying the fruits in academia, industrial organofluorine chemistry has developed over 80 years via dramatic changes during World War II. Nowadays, it provides various materials essential … Show more

“…The P, Fc oupling constant of 157 Hz indicates a trans arrangement of the fluoridol igand to the phosphorusa tom of the iPr 2 PC 2 H 4 NMe 2 ligand. [71] Therefore, the complex[ Pt{k 2 -(P,P)-Cy 2 PC 2 H 4 PCy 2 }(h 2 -PhCCPh)] (14)w as also treated with one equivalent XeF 2 and the reactionw as monitored by NMR spectroscopy (Figure 7, Scheme 4). [101,102,104,105,114,115] Formation of platinum(IV) fluorido complexes As mentioned above,t here is some literature precedence on CÀFbond formation steps by reductive elimination at metal(IV) fluoridoc omplexes (Pd, Pt).…”

“…[71,124] Further proof for the identity of compound 18 was given by X-ray crystallography. [124] The reactiono f[ Pt{k 2 -(P,P)-Cy 2 PC 2 H 4 PCy 2 }(h 2 -PhCCPh)] (14) with two equivalents of XeF 2 yieldeds everalf luorinated organic products as well as tolane and [Pt(m-OH){k 2 -(P,P)-Cy 2 PC 2 H 4 PCy 2 }] 2 [FHF] 2 (15)a st he only metal-containing product (Scheme 5). The platinum center adopts as quare-planar geometry by the phosphorus atoms P1 and P2 of the dcpe ligand as well as the C33 and C36 atoms.T he Pt1ÀP1 and Pt1ÀP2 bond lengths and the bite angle are similar to the one known foro ther platinum(II) complexes with the dcpe ligand.…”

“…Many fluorocarbon‐based organic compounds have been synthesized since the early 19th century and these compounds showed varying degrees of toxicity 12. 13 For instance, fluoroacetate, a chemical introduced back in the 1940s as a pesticide, was discovered to be highly toxic to mammals and insects 14.…”

“…By the time of Molina and Rowland´s first warning of potential dangers to the ozone layer caused by CFC´s, they had been in commercial production for around forty years, since the 1930s (Okazoe, 2009). Fifteen years more were needed before the first global treaty, the Montreal Protocol, entered into force on January 1, 1989.…”
