“…Body mass index has been widely used to assess general body composition. It increases with age (25)(26)(27), and children aged 7-15 years with normal body mass index may become overweight or obese adults (body mass index > 25) (28). In young subjects with a normal body mass index, prospective morbidity is dependent on body mass index as well as on age (27), and maintenance of body mass index at the level at which it is present during adolescence is an important factor in preventing future disease.…”

“…The dependent measure, diet satisfaction, is based on several articles on obesity and healthy diets (Arcan et al, 2007;Benelam, 2009;Krebs-Smith et al, 1995;Pliner, 2008), and comprised six items related to satisfaction with the degree to which the family's diet was low in saturated fat, had sufficient fruits and vegetables, contained only moderate amounts of sugars, was not energy dense, contained only moderate amounts of red meat, contained sufficient water rather than sugary drinks, and avoided foods that were high in additives and preservatives (United States α = 0.88; Australia α = 0.87). BMI is calculated from self-reported height and weight measures, which have been shown previously to yield valid measures of BMI in large population samples (e.g., Venn et al, 2007).…”

“…This study uses self-reported measures of behavior, weight, and height (BMI factors). While self-reported measures to calculate BMI have been found to be highly related to BMI derived from measured height and weight, they tend to underestimate true weight status (Venn et al, 2007). Future research should consider the association between psychological measures, food behavior measures, and a broader range of objective biomedical measures.…”

“…We also know that obesity is associated, since childhood, with cardiovascular risk factors (2,3). In addition, obesity in childhood is associated with obesity and cardiovascular disease in adulthood, whether or not there is obesity in later ages (3,4).…”
