“…Clearly, a variety of different cues modulate these activities (McNeil et al 1995;Delisle and Hardy 1997), but contact chemoreception plays an important role in egg-laying behaviour. Rivet and Albert (1990) and Grant et al (2000) provided evidence that compounds stimulating oviposition are present on the surface waxes of host needles. Thus, the detection of specific chemicals reflecting plant quality could be important for this species, and chemosensilla have been identified on the tarsi (Mitchell and Seabrook 1974) and the proboscis (Städler and Seabrook 1975;Walters et al 1998).…”
