Ovulation Day After Onset of Vulval Bleeding in a Beagle Colony

Abstract: Contents This study investigated the duration of the interval between the onset of vulval bleeding at pro‐oestrus and ovulation estimated from the plasma progesterone concentration in a large number of beagle bitches. The influence and association of individual variation, ageing and duration of the oestrous cycle were also investigated. The mean time of ovulation after the onset of vulval bleeding was 11.1 ± 0.2 days, but it widely ranged from 3 to 31 days. This timing was not influenced by age or duration of … Show more

“…In dogs, ovulation occurs 2 days after the LH surge and on average 3 days after the onset of oestrus. A recent study of 390 oestrus cycles in 102 bitches in our beagle colony (Hori et al 2012) examined the interval from the onset of proestrus, that is, first day of observed vulval serosanguinous discharge to the day of ovulation estimated from the plasma progesterone (P 4 ) concentrations. The interval between vulval bleeding and ovulation ranged from 3 to 31 days and averaged 11.1 ± 0.2 (SE) days.…”

“…It is known that the optimal days for mating bitches differ in dogs of one breed (Phemister et al, 1973;Hori et al, 2012;Hahn et al, 2017) and may even "shi" during life, even in the same animal (Grishina & Minjuk, 2016). It is believed that with increasing age of the bitch it should be mated at a later date.…”

“…is is oen the most common cause of apparent infertility because mating occurs at the wrong time. Most owners practice mating (insemination) for 10-14 days from the beginning of proestrus, but this does not always give the expected result, as ovulation can occur on 21 and even 27-31 days (England & Concannon, 2002;Niżanski W. 2004;Kustric & Dzhonston, 2005;Bicudo et al, 2010;Derkach, 2011;Hori et al, 2012;Davidenko & Ponomarenko, 2016;Djul'ger & Djul'ger, 2018).…”

“…The day of ovulation is not linked to estrous cycle duration. The ovulation time occur at 11 days after onset of vulvar bleeding(Hori et al, 2012). In the current work, we could predict ovulation day by using B-Mode ultrasonography and vaginal cytology.…”
