Oxacillin

Abstract

S Oxacillin Rash in an elderly patient: case reportA 65-year-old man developed rash following treatment with oxacillin for methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus leg infection.The man was hospitalised with leg cellulitis; he was administered oxacillin [route and dosage not stated] for methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus infection followed by cefazolin. He developed a palpable rash on his back and legs [duration of treatment to reaction onset not stated]. Tests showed an ESR value of 70 mm/h with a rheumatoid factor value of 20 IU/ml. Microscopic proteinuria (protein/creatinine ratio: 0.3) and microscopic haematuria (>50 RBCs/hpf) were also reported. Histology showed a lymphocytic infiltration within the dermis.The man was diagnosed with drug rash presumably due to oxacillin. Cefazolin was continued, and he returned home after 2 weeks; at follow-up, rash resolution was noted.
