Nuclear power plays an important role in providing reliable and environmentally affordable energy. 1 In a light water reactor (LWR), the typical power densities in the nuclear cores are ~50-75 MWth m −3 , which makes the systems susceptible to severe accidents. 2 The accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) system aims to improve the safety margins of LWRs by enhancing the steam oxidation resistance of the cladding and reducing hydrogen generation. 3 Surface-modified Zrbased alloys are regarded as promising materials to expand the ATF concept. 4 Numerous coatings systems have been developed, including metallic Cr 5,6 and FeCrAl coatings, 7,8 SiC coatings, 9 TiN coatings, 10,11 CrN coatings, 12 and MAX phase coatings. 13
