Oxidative coupling of quinones and aromatic compounds by palladium(II) acetate

Abstract: The oxidation of 1,4-benzoquinone, 2-phenyl-1,4-benzoquinone, 1,4-naphthoquinone, and 1,2-naphthoquinone by palladium(II) acetate in acetic acid containing arenes gave the corresponding aryl-substituted quiñones. Treatment of 1,4-naphthoquinone with aromatic heterocycles such as furfural, 2-acetylfuran, methyl 2-furoate, 2-acetylthiophene, l-(phenylsulfonyl)pyrrole, l-(phenylsulfonyl)indole, 4-pyrone, and l-methyl-2-pyridone in the presence of palladium acetate gave the corresponding 2-heteroaryl-substituted 1… Show more

“…Examples of reactions between heteroarenes and olefins in the presence of palladium acetate are well known [36]. This method was used for the production of substituted 1,4-naphthoquinones 13a-f [11], 13g [37], and 13h [38]. According to data in [11], oxidative coupling between naphthoquinone and thiophene or furan does not occur under these conditions.…”

“…These derivatives 15-41 were synthesized following standard procedures starting from either naphthalene-1,4-dione 7 or 2-bromonaphthalene 8. 26 The oxidative coupling of naphthalene-1,4-dione 7 with 2-substituted heterocycles in acetic acid and stoichiometric amounts of palladium acetate under reflux conditions gave the corresponding 2-heteroaryl-substituted naphthalene-1,4-diones 15-20, 29, 30, 31, and 33-41 (Scheme 1). Compounds 21-24 and 32 were prepared via Heck coupling of 2-bromonaphthalene 8 with different acrylic esters to give 2-substituted naphthalene esters 9-13 and followed by their oxidation with periodic acid and chromium trioxide (Scheme 2).…”
