In this article, we report on the pyrolysis of polypropylene (PP) and high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) in the absence and presence of plain and metal‐oxide‐impregnated bentonite clays [BCs; acid‐washed bentonite clay (AWBC), Zn/AWBC, Ni/AWBC, Co/AWBC, Fe/AWBC, and Mn/AWBC] into useful products. Thermal and catalytic runs were performed at 300°C in the case of PP and at 350°C in the case of HDPE for a contact time of 30 min. The effects of different catalysts and their concentrations on the overall yields and the yields of liquid, gas, and residue were studied. The efficacy of each catalyst is reported on the basis of the highest liquid yields (in weight percentage). The derived liquid products were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy; this confirmed the presence of paraffins, olefins, and naphthenes. The results indicate the catalytic role of impregnated BCs compared to plain BC with the optimum efficiency shown by Co/AWBC in the case of PP and Zn/AWBC in the case of HDPE toward the formation of liquid products in a desirable C range with the enrichment of olefins and naphthenes in the case of PP and paraffins and olefins in the case of HDPE compared to the thermal run. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of Sterically Demanding Bis(phosphinimine) Dibenzofuran Ligands and Subsequent Zinc Metalation

In light of previous success surrounding the use of bis(phosphinimine)dibenzofuran ligands for zinc-mediated lactide polymerization, a series of sterically demanding P=N pincer compounds have been prepared with important steric and electronic modifications at both P- and N-sites (L, 3a–d). These systems are highly crystalline and have been extensively characterized using multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The ligands can be transformed into their protonated analogues [HL][BArF4] (4a–d, [BArF4] = [B(m-(CF3)2-C6H3)4]) by reaction with Brookhart’s acid, and subsequently coordinated to zinc via an alkane elimination reaction with [ZnEt2] at ambient temperature to afford the corresponding [LZnEt][BArF4] cationic complexes 5a–d. In addition, an unusual chloridozinc species [LZnCl][BArF4] (5c′) has been isolated and structurally characterized, providing comparisons to previously established ligand sets with similar geometries.

The problem of sulfur content in heavy oil is a challenge for researchers to meet the needs of environmentally friendly fuels. The catalyst preparation plays an important role in the desulfurization process. The synthesis of ZnO-activated carbon as a catalyst and its activity in oxidative desulfurization (ODS) reaction has been successfully carried out. In this work, the ZnO and activated carbon (AC) were blended by a solid-solid reaction. The ZnO, AC, and ZnO-AC were then characterized using acidity test with pyridine vapor adsorption, Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDX), and Surface Area Analyzer (SAA). ODS of dibenzothiophene (DBT) reaction was performed by using H2O2 under variation of the reaction time (30, 60, 120, and 150 min) for the ZnO-AC catalyst. The efficiency of ODS-DBT was analyzed by a UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The XRD analysis result showed that ZnO-AC blended displays new crystal peaks of Zn in the AC diffractogram. The surface area (734.351 m2/g) and acidity (4.8780 mmol/g) of ZnO-AC were higher than ZnO and AC themselves. ZnO-AC produced the highest efficiency of ODS-DBT which was 93.83% in the reaction time of 120 min. Therefore, the simple procedure of this physical blending was proved effective to homogenize between ZnO and AC into ZnO-AC so that it has good physicochemical properties as an ODS-DBT catalyst.
