Oxidative stress and alopecia areata

Abstract: Alopecia areata (AA) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by non-scarring hair loss on the scalp or any other part of the hair-bearing skin. While the collapse of the immune privilege is considered as one of the most accepted theories accounting for AA, the exact pathogenesis of this disease remains unclear by now. Other factors, such as genetic predisposition, allergies, microbiota, and psychological stress, also play an important role in the occurrence and development of AA. Oxidative stress (… Show more

“…Indeed, patients with Laron syndrome caused by the defect of IGF-1 signaling often exhibit defect of hair growth ( Trüeb, 2018 ). Also, several previous reports indicated that accumulated oxidative stress in skin tissues might cause hair losses due to an aggravation of inflammatory responses around hair follicles ( Ma et al, 2023 ). Therefore, we measured the levels of hair growth hormones such as IGF-1 and VEGF, and SOD in the sera of experimental mice by ELISAs.…”

“…More precisely, the production of alcohols and carboxylic acids in the presence of oxygen-reactive species (radical-mediated lipid peroxidation) leads to esters formation [ 66 ]. Oxidative stress (OS), an unbalance between the oxidation and antioxidant defence systems, is believed to be associated with AA and may trigger the collapse of hair follicle-immune privilege [ 67 ].…”

“…Genetics, hormones, dietary status, environmental exposures (radiation, environmental pollutants), and medicines are some of the many causes of hair thinning and loss [3]. Another name for hair loss is alopecia [9].The thinning or complete absence of hair on the scalp and other usually hairy body areas is known medically as alopecia [10]. Socially and mentally, this disorder can cause a lack of self-esteem.…”

“…The immune system's destruction of hair follicles may be set off by oxidative stress, defined as an imbalance between the antioxidant and oxidation defense systems, and is thought to be linked to alopecia [9].Vitamin and mineral supplements are effective treatments for hair loss [14]. Hair loss can occur if the body does not get enough vitamins and minerals for healthy cell development and function.…”
