Oxidative stress and apoptosis induced by hydroxyapatite nanoparticles in C6 cells

Abstract: Hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles have been reported to exhibit anti-tumor effects on various human cancers, but the effects of HA on glioma cells remain unclear. The aim of this study was to explore whether HA can inhibit the proliferation and induce the apoptosis of C6 cells. Use of the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay indicated that HA induced C6 cell death in a concentration-dependent and time-dependent manner. Results from hoechst 33342 staining and flow cytometry a… Show more

“…However, unlike the latter, HAp has the advantage of showing strong affinity for organic compounds and living organisms, bringing obvious advantages for instance if used for environmental remediation or cancer treatment. [35][36][37] Again, defects and dopants play a central role here. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies clearly show that the surface reactive species is superoxide O •− 2 .…”

“…This helps in deceleration of atherosclerotic injury Lately recent research has unveiled several newer domains of metformin's action that produce potential beneficial effects in stressful conditions (Natarelli & Schober, 2015). Metformin improves mitochondrial homeostasis, thereby diminishes apoptosis induced by oxidative stress and prevents cell death (Xu, Xu, Li, Huang, & Yang, 2012). It boosts the antioxidant system by complementing mitochondrial function (Chandwaney, Leichtweis, Leeuwenburgh, & Ji, 1998;Gupta, Chellappan, Mishra, Malipeddi, & Dua, 2018).…”

“…Compared with viral vectors, which pose the danger of immunogenicity and pathogenicity, HAP has high osteoconductivity and favorable biocompatibility, and/or osteoinductivity without proinflammatory or immunogenic side effects (16)(17)(18). HAP inhibits tumor cell growth directly (19), and is a useful gene delivery system due to its efficiency, safety and economy (12).…”
