Oxidative stress and fish immune system: phagocytosis and leukocyte respiratory burst activity

Abstract: Molecular oxygen is a necessary compound for all aerobic organisms, although oxygen is a potent oxidant, which can cause oxidative stress (OS). OS occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of oxidant and antioxidants components, are result of normal cell metabolism, and many of these compounds play a fundamental role in several metabolic pathways. The organism produces several reactive oxygen species (ROS), but they are balanced by an antioxidant defense system that maintains the levels of these… Show more

“…These results suggest that organic acids had no effect on the haematopoietic system. Leucocyte plays an important role in the cellular immunity and disease resistance of fish, so they are important indicators of non‐specific immune response (Biller & Takahashi, 2018). In the current study, a diet of 0.2% MA + 0.2% CA increased the total white blood cell count.…”

“…SOD, GPx and CAT are important antioxidant enzymes (Biller & Takahashi, 2018;Ighodaro & Akinloye, 2018). SOD catalyses superoxide radicals and produces O 2 and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ).…”
