Oxidative stress and innate immunity status in chickens exposed to high dose of ascorbic acid

Abstract: The effects of high dose ascorbic acid (10 000 mg·kg(-1) in the diet) and the transition metal on the presence of oxidative stress in the internal organs of growing chicks, as well as on the innate immune system status, were investigated. Supplementation with a high dose of ascorbic acid had pro-inflammatory effects on the intestinal mucosa, and lysozyme levels were decreased significantly in all organs studied. High-dose ascorbic acid caused an imbalance between prooxidative and antioxidative activities and w… Show more

“…This suggests that domestic fowl under heat stress should receive vitamin C supplementation. Ascorbic acid participates in several biological processes; it assists collagen synthesis and maintenance; it is essential for formation and maintenance of connective tissue, bone and cartilage; it, stimulates the immune system and enhances disease resistance (Farquharson et al, 1998;Berzina et al, 2013;Sgavioli et al, 2013;Chand et al, 2014). Finally, ascorbic acid influences the development of the leg bones in stressed birds (Lesson & Summers, 2001).…”

“…Collagen is a crucial component of human tissues, including the periodontal membrane, and is necessary for wound healing, periodontal regeneration, and the integrity of the gingival vasculature. Some evidence suggesting that vitamin C affects host immunoreaction by exerting an influence on phagocytosis in a chemotactic row of polymorphonuclear leukocytes has also been presented 22 23 …”

“…Some evidence suggesting that vitamin C affects host immunoreaction by exerting an influence on phagocytosis in a chemotactic row of polymorphonuclear leukocytes has also been presented. 22 Therefore, vitamin C is considered a main component of the human body's antioxidant defense mechanism. 23 A number of biological mechanisms have been suggested to explain how vitamin C can influence the periodontal condition.…”
