Oxidative Stress in the Dahl Hypertensive Rat

Abstract: Enhanced production of oxygen free radicals may play a role in hypertension by affecting vascular smooth muscle contraction, resistance to blood flow, and organ damage. The aim of this study was to determine whether oxygen free radicals are involved in the development of salt-induced hypertension. Dahl salt-sensitive (Dahl-S) and salt-resistant (Dahl-R) rats were fed either a high salt (6.0% NaCl) or low salt (0.3% NaCl) diet for 4 weeks. The high salt diet caused the development of severe hypertension in Dahl… Show more

“…Oxidative stress develops when the well-regulated balance between prooxidants and antioxidants becomes uncontrolled and tips in favor of pro-oxidants. Oxidative stress is a major contributor to the aging process (26) and appears to be a common feature of hypertensive disorders from diverse origins (9,(27)(28)(29). ROS have also been shown to be involved in cardiac hypertrophy induced by several stimuli, such as mechanical stretch, endothelin and angiotensin II (30).…”

“…25 Superoxide anion may contribute to increased degradation of nitric oxide, resulting in increased vascular tone. 26,27 Scavenging superoxide by exogenous superoxide dismutase has been reported to result in a fall of blood pressure in SHR but not in WKY. 28 In the present study, the sodium-induced changes in kidney XO activity in Dahl S rats were not dose-dependent.…”

“…1,2 The production of superoxide anions in aortic vessels is increased in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). [3][4][5][6] In addition, the production of superoxide anions is increased in deoxycorticosterone acetate-salt hypertensive rats, 4 Dahl-salt hypertensive rats, 7 and stroke-prone SHR (SHRSP). 1,8 Inhibition of ROS reduces blood pressure in SHR.…”
