ABSTRACT:The present work aims to establish the possibility of using local clays to treat wastewater. Thus, three clay samples extracted from two localities in the south of Côte d'Ivoire have been studied in their crude state. The qualitative physicochemical study that consisted in measurement of pH variation and argillaceous particles zeta potential showed that the Nieki-Agneby clay and the Beige Anyama clay presented disposal to uptake phosphate ions in solution at pH 5. For each clay, it is shown that the tension accompanying the sorption of a phosphate ion could be estimated to -5 mV. Differences in their composition and in the number of hydrating molecules of water were also accessible. The quantitative study performed with the Nieki-Agneby clay thereafter consisted following the sorption kinetic. The adsorption was found to reach the maximum after 5 h. of exchange, and almost 400 µg phosphate ions in per gram of clay were fixed. Future studies will focus on the modification of these materials in order to increase their sorption capacity.

Pedological studies using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) showed a Xanthic Ferralsol formed from the degradation of bauxite on a slope in the Caparaó region, in southeastern Brazil. We found a decrease in the number and size of bauxite fragments toward the top of the profiles, bauxite fragments that were more degraded at the top of the profiles, transformation of gibbsite into kaolinite, and absolute enrichment in silicon in the mass balance. These indicators suggest that resilication could be the major process responsible for formation of the soil; detailed studies are needed to verify the origin of the silica. The reintroduction of silica into the system occurs by the biogeochemical cycling of vegetation and, in some cases, water table fluctuations, highlighting the role of resilication as a soil-forming process in bauxite-derived soils.

RESUMOCom o intuito de avaliar diferenças de comportamento entre solos das superfícies geomórficas Sul-Americana e Velhas da região dos Cerrados, todos sob uso atual de cobertura vegetal nativa, foram realizadas caracterizações físicas, químicas e mineralógicas, bem como feitas análises de componentes principais desses atributos. Com os solos referenciados por sub-região e pela superfície geomórfica que representam, três agrupamentos foram constituídos: Grupo 1: solos de textura argilosa a muito argilosa e hipo a mesoférricos; Grupo 2: solos de textura média a arenosa e hipoférricos; e Grupo 3: solos de textura argilosa a muito argilosa e férricos. A retenção de água dos horizontes superficiais dos solos estudados foi positivamente correlacionada com os teores de argila e carbono orgânico. Os solos do Grupo 3 apresentaram a maior oferta de bases trocáveis dos horizontes superficiais, o que foi relacionado, em grande parte, com a maior reciclagem imposta pela formação florestal local, quando comparada à da formação de cerrado, presente em 31 dos 33 perfis de solos dos Grupos 1 e 2. O Grupo 3, diferenciado pelos elevados teores de Fe herdados do material de origem, é o grupo mais homogêneo em termos mineralógicos, com todos os perfis hematíticos.
