Oxyfuel combustion in rotary kiln lime production

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to study the impact of oxyfuel combustion applied to a rotary kiln producing lime. Aspects of interest are product quality, energy efficiency, stack gas composition, carbon dioxide emissions, and possible benefits related to carbon dioxide capture. The method used is based on multicomponent chemical equilibrium calculations to predict process conditions. A generic model of a rotary kiln for lime production was validated against operational data and literature. This predicting sim… Show more

“…shows the conventional CO 2 pressure in the kiln (10%v or 0.1 atm); the CO pressure is normally at or above this isobar. The curvature of the field boundaries shows the upper temperature limit of stability of spurrite which is enhanced in CO 2 -rich atmospheres as may occur in as oxyfuel combustion [64,65] which typically generate atmospheres rich in CO 2 .…”

“…In western Europe, most of the WIP and lime production plants are already equipped with a gas cleaning unit to meet the emission limits specified in environmental regulations. Therefore, highly pure CO 2 can be obtained through post-combustion capture [11]. thyssenkrupp Uhde operates a transportable pilot-plant for CO 2 capture, which can be connected to different industrial CO 2 point sources, such as the steel mill in Duisburg, to investigate the CO 2 capture process under real industrial conditions (Fig.…”

“…Waste CO2 was available at the flue gas of the on-site lime kiln at the Raahe steel mill [76]. However, the CO2 concentration of the lime kiln flue gas is assumed to be approximately 40 wt.% ( [77]; first combustion with no re-circulation). Thus, 2.5 times the CO2containing gas is needed for the completion of the process in comparison to 99.8% of pure CO2 [78] from Porvoo.…”
