Oxygen‐18 and carbon‐13 records for the last 14,000 years from Lacustrine carbonates of Siling‐Co (Lake) in the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: To understand paleoenvironmental changes for the central Qinghai‐Tibetan plateau, we analyzed stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon from calcium carbonates in a bottom sediment core collected from Siling‐Co (lake). Five conventional and two TAMS 14C dates indicate that the core recovered sediments of the last 14,000 years. Calcium carbonates in the sediments seem to be primary carbonates precipitated chemically in the lake, and not clastic particles from limestones distributed around the lake, because of large … Show more

“…Lake status is an index of the water balance (precipitation minus evaporation) over the lake and its catchment. Lake histories produced since the publication of the GLSDB have also been compiled and are included in our analyses—see the supporting information for details [ Bird et al ., ; Boomer et al ., ; Chen et al ., ; Chawchai et al ., ; Chen et al ., ; Ferronskii et al ., ; Fowell et al ., ; Gasse et al ., ; Grunert et al ., ; Kong et al ., ; Heinecke et al ., ; Herzschuh et al ., ; Hodell et al ., ; Huang et al ., , ; Jiang et al ., ; Jiang and Liu , ; Li and Morrill , ; Li et al ., , , ; Long et al ., ; Madsen et al ., ; Mathis et al ., ; Mingram et al ., ; Morinaga et al ., ; Morrill et al ., ; Pan et al ., ; Peck et al ., ; Penny et al ., ; Prokopenko et al ., ; Rades et al ., ; Ricketts et al ., ; Schwanghart et al ., ; Shen et al ., ; Sheng et al ., ; Wang et al ., ; Wang and Ji , ; Wünnemann et al ., , ; Xiao et al ., ; Yang et al ., ; Zhang et al ., , ; Zhao et al ., , , ; Zhou et al ., ]. “…1). Five lakes are on the Tibetan Plateau: Selin Co Morinaga et al, 1993;Kashiwaya et al, 1995) and Ahung Co (Morrill, 2004;Morrill et al, 2006) on the central-southern Tibetan Plateau; and Koucha Lake (Mischke et al, 2008), Donggi Cona (Mischke et al, 2010) and Qinghai Lake (Lister et al, 1991;Liu et al, 2007) are on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Three lakes lie on the northern margin of the Chinese Loess Plateau in northern China: Hamaertai Lake , Hetongchahan Nur and Bahan Nur (Guo et al, 2007).…”

“…Due to a lack of terrestrial macrofossils, age models for Tibetan lake records have been based on radiocarbon dates of aquatic material. These lakes have hard-water effects as large as 3200 yr , however, and possible variations in the hard-water effect through time were not taken into account in every case (Gasse et al, 1991Lister et al, 1991;Morinaga et al, 1993). This new record from Ahung Co has an accurate age model based on more than 50 radiocarbon dates of both aquatic material and terrestrial charcoal.…”
