Oxygen emission lines in the high resolution spectra of 9P/Tempel 1 following the Deep Impact event

Abstract: Context. On 2005 July 4, the NASA spacecraft Deep Impact delivered an impactor on the comet 9P/Tempel 1 to study the material ejected from the nucleus. A worldwide observation campaign accompanied the mission, to characterize the activity of 9P/Tempel 1 before and after the impact. Aims. At La Palma (Canary Islands), the comet was observed from July 2 to July 9 using the echelle spectrograph SARG on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). Fifteen spectra were obtained with a resolving power of R = 29 000 in th… Show more

“…This is the reason why the study of these lines is interesting. We catalogue them in the comets we have observed until now (Saba et al 2005;Cremonese et al 2007;Capria et al 2008), looking for possible correlations with the heliocentric distance and other observation parameters, with the long-term aim of attempting or suggesting possible identifications. Many of the lines labeled as unidentified in the 17P/ Holmes spectra are detectable in the corresponding spectra of the other comets we have observed at closer distances from the Sun, while some of them have not been previously detected.…”

“…These are listed in Table V. The three oldest observations all suffered from non-simultaneity of the observations of the three lines. Indeed, the Halley and Hyakutake observations reported in Table V Capria et al (2008) each contain observations of only 1 line of the red doublet. Thus, these observations should be used cautiously.…”
