“…At 3–14° C, the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the water can be at most 10–13 mg l −1 decreasing within that temperature range (Montgomery et al , 1964). The dissolved oxygen concentration of 10–12 mg l −1 in the present study was sufficient, however, since the embryos of coregonids require an oxygen concentration of > 3·2 mg l −1 (Czerkies et al , 2002). Furthermore, the incubation water was aerated to provide oxygen to the boundary layer next to the chorion of eggs.…”

“…On the basis of day‐degrees, the embryonic development of C. lavaretus was retarded at incubation temperatures of 7·0 and 9·2° C. Retardation of embryonic development has previously been observed under hypoxic conditions and in exposure to various pollutants (Rombough, 1988; Kamler, 1992; Shang & Wu, 2004). Hypoxia caused a lowering of the heart rate of C. lavaretus and C. albula embryos, and the reduction in the heart rate was more pronounced at 8 than at 4° C (Czerkies et al , 2002). A reduced heart rate is an indication of retarded development in yolk‐sac fry following exposure to various pollutants (Vuorinen & Vuorinen, 1987; Keinänen et al , 2000).…”

“…Oxygenated depth was calculated as the minimum water depth range observed during the eutrophic phase with the water containing at least 2.5 mg l 21 dissolved oxygen. The limit of 2.5 mg l 21 was chosen to correspond to the critical oxygen level at which embryo development is negatively affected 47 . Egg survival data.…”

“…It is known that oxygen diffusion into the perivitelline space depends on egg envelopes thickness (Fuiman 2002). Comparing oxygen consumption between intact eggs and dechorionated embryos, Buznikov (1961) showed that envelopes reduce oxygen consumption, what happens especially before hatching (Czerkies et al 2002). Ciuhandu et al (2005) concluded that O. mykiss embryos without egg envelopes moved more frequently and grew faster than those developing inside egg envelopes.…”
