Oxygen-Uptake (VO2) Kinetics and Functional Mobility Performance in Impaired Older Adults

Abstract: Measurement of submaximal oxygen-uptake kinetics may provide a more practical and relevant assessment of deconditioning in frail older adults, and may eventually supplant maximal (peak) oxygen uptake as a predictor of functional disability in older adults.

“…We did not assess VO 2max or peak VO 2 with an incremental exercise test. However, some reports have shown that submaximal oxygen uptake measures were more predictive of the functional mobility performance than peak VO 2 in both healthy and impaired older subjects [17]. Nevertheless, we Abbreviations as in Table 2 0 can express VO 2 at comfortable speed as a percentage of maximally sustainable VO 2 observed at the as-fast-aspossible velocity.…”

“…For instance, various components of aerobic fitness have been linked to increased functional ability and activities of daily living. 4,5 Conversely, decreased functional ability and activities of daily living have been linked to falls. 6 In order to motivate people to perform exercises that have these health benefits, game platforms with physical games, also known as exergames or active videogames, have been investigated as exercise tools.…”

“…A comparison of MRT derived from onset of self-paced walking with ''conventional'' VO 2 kinetics data (treadmill and cycle ergometry) in other patient groups goes some way to assessing the validity of this measure. For example, Alexander et al (2003) reported MRT values (single exponential curve fitted to the VO 2 response to treadmill walking) for two groups of community dwelling adults over 65 years [Group 1, N = 20, aged 82 ± 1 years (mean ± SEM), VO 2peak < 18 ml/kg min; Group 2, N = 21, aged 76 ± 1 years, VO 2peak > 18 ml/ min kg)]. The MRT for Group 1 was 58.0 s (SEM 9.3) and for Group 2 was 23.4 s (SEM 3.1).…”
