Oxygen vacancy induced structural variations of exfoliated monolayerMnO2sheets

Abstract: We report findings on the structural stability of exfoliated monolayer MnO 2 sheets. Our study reveals that monolayer MnO 2 sheets display two specific kinds of structural modification under electron irradiation. An atomic reconstruction ͑2 ϫ 1͒ and a phase of MnO, induced by ordered oxygen vacancies, were identified by transmission electron microscopy techniques and further characterized by comparison with density-functional theory calculations. These findings are expected to significantly broaden current kno… Show more

“…Recently, lower-voltage TEM has been frequently applied to the direct observation of atomic defects in graphene111213 and related materials (e.g., carbon nanotubes1415 and BN nanosheets1617). On the other hand, there have been few observations of oxide nanosheets1819, including our previous study, because of the critical irradiation damage during TEM observations. In addition to knock-on damage, transition metal oxides are easily reduced by electron stimulated desorption (ESD)2021.…”

“…31 Through electron irradiation, OVs can also be generated, as reported in our early work. 32,33 Similarly, TiV-and OV-derived band gap narrowing has also been predicted in ultrathin TiO 2 nanosheets (not lepidocrocitetype). 34 Therefore, it is desirable to understand how water interacts with TiO 2 nanosheets.…”
