Oxytalan connective tissue fibers: A review

Abstract: Abstract. Oxytalan connective tissue fibers are a separate and distinct fiber type. Although current histochemical methods cannot distinguish pre‐elastic from oxytalan fibers, the two fiber types are readily distinguished by electron microscopy. Oxytalan fibers are found in periodontal membranes of all teeth of man, monkeys, rats, guinea pigs and mice. Increased numbers and size of oxytalan fibers are observed in periodontal membranes of teeth subjected to increased stress, such as those used for bridge abutm… Show more

“…The hearts were weighed and fixed in formaldehyde 4% buffered pH 7.2-7.4, processed using routine methods, embedded in paraffin, sectioned in 4, 5 or 8µm and stained using: hematoxilin-eosin, Masson's trichrome, picro-sirius red polarization, Weigert's resorcinol fuchsin solution (with and without oxon). The treatment with Weigert's resorcinol fuchsin solution using oxon (10% in water solution during 45 min) is important because the oxon produces oxidation which reveals the oxytalan fibers in violet (9,10). Large amounts of oxytalan fibers suggest increasing stiffness of tissue because these fibers are the less stretching of the elastic fibers.…”

“…Among these matrix proteins, type III collagen and oxytalan connective tissue fibers purportedly formed the most significant components in the periodontal ligament and odontogenic ectomesenchyme [11][12][13][14][15][16] .…”

“…A number of these elements have been reported to be rich in microfibrils -e.g., the ciliary zonule of the eye is composed predominantly of 12 nm microfibrils (9; 23) as are the oxytalan fibres of periodontal ligament (8) and skin (7). Similar microfibrils have been observed in the mesangium of the renal glomerulus (24).…”

“…5,6). In addition, morphologically similar microfibrils in this size range have been demonstrated in a number of tissues including skin (7), periodontal ligament (8) and the ocular ciliary zonule (9). In these latter locations their histochemical staining properties have led to their being called 'oxytalan' fibres (8).…”
