The purpose of this study was to determine the moment of the year for the oyster recruitment and define the type of collector and environmental conditions that maximize recruitment. Collections were conducted, during 12 months, on Amazon Macrotidal Mangrove at two different sites: raft (point I) and mangrove (point II). In each location three types of collectors were used (1) transparent PET bottles, (2) green PET bottles, and (3) PVC sheets, each with three replicates. Spats were counted and measured at 45-day intervals, while the environmental data were measured every two weeks. Identification of oyster species occurred by genetic testing (multiplex PCR) by randomly selecting individuals by sampling. Results indicated spat capturing was significantly influenced by the collector type, location and period of collection (P<0.05, MANOVA) with significantly higher recruitment in the PVC collector (P<0.05, Tukey test). Oyster recruitment occurred throughout the year, suggesting that these individuals reproduce during all months; however, months with less rain and greater salinity were the best for spat collection, while the rainy period with lower salinity proved to be the best for individuals growth. The location in interaction with the environmental variables, mainly salinity, has a significant effect on the recruitment rate of spat and on their size, so that point II (mangrove) had the best results for recruitment and point I (raft) provided the spats of the largest size. Genetic identification verified two native oysters species (Crassostrea gasar and Crassostrea rhizophorae) in both points (I and II).

Densities of oyster seed, scars and other epibenthos on plastic sheets and bottles were observed over two years at a mangrove island (Ilha Canela), Bragança, Pará, northern Brazil. The only oyster species found settling on the substrates was a possibly exotic oyster (Crassostrea sp. canela) that is closely related to Indo-Pacific Crassostrea and that also occurs in southern China. Densities of seed and scars of Crassostrea sp. canela on bottles were about half those on sheets. Seed and scars predominated (>95% relative abundance) on both collectors. Although densities of other epibenthos were low and irregular, these were positively correlated with densities of seed on both collectors. Oyster seed and barnacles on sheets were more abundant in the wet season. However, in the dry season, seed predominated on the inside of bottles, a refuge from predation or desiccation or both, whereas oyster scars and barnacles were more abundant on the outside. The target species for oyster culture in Pará is Crassostrea gasar. Oyster growers are concerned about potential impacts of Crassostrea sp. canela, the larvae of which appear to prefer high salinity. Seed is regular and abundant as densities exceed published figures for several other Crassostrea species. Knowledge of the timing and density of settlement of this oyster and associated epibenthos is important in order to minimize interference during seed collection of target species. The timing and location of seed collection is therefore critical. We also suggest experiments with collectors conditioned with adult Crassostrea gasar shell remnants, as well as those where limited establishment of epibenthos, such as barnacles, has been allowed, in order to maximize spat collection of the target species, C. gasar, along the Pará coast.

Efficient spat collection is essential to both the successful restoration and cultivation of the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis). The results of four different experiments investigating larval abundance, and the use of seven different types of suspended spat collectors in seven locations in the SW Netherlands were compared. These different types included Chinese hats, Vexar mesh, PVC tubes, and four types of bivalve shells. Larval abundance, and timing of peaks in abundance for both O. edulis and the non‐indigenous Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) varied between locations and years. The most successful spat collectors were sacks of bivalve shells. In general, most spat were observed on collectors deployed 1–2 weeks after the peak in larval abundance was detected. Fouling was heavy and may have prevented larval settlement on collectors deployed too early. Suspended sacks of bivalve shells show great promise as O. edulis spat collectors intended for reef restoration purposes but may need further development for cultivation application.
