Oyster spat recruitment in Espírito Santo State, Brazil, using recycled materials

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThis paper evaluated the effectiveness of four types of oyster spat collectors, made with recycled materials, in the recruitment of the mangrove oyster Crassostrea spp. at five sites in the Benevente river estuary, Anchieta District and on two islands in Piúma District, both in Espírito Santo State. The collectors were made of: 1-oyster shells, 2-PET bottles, 3-car tires and 4-tiles, all of them suspended by ropes and tied to roots of Rhizophora mangle or mussel long-lines. The number of spat re… Show more

“…Studies have reported that oysters have different settlement behavior on different surfaces (LEE et al, 2012;NALESSO et al, 2008), corroborating results obtained from point II, where it was reported that the type of artificial substrate significantly influenced oyster recruitment.…”

“…canela observed in the present study is remarkably regular and predictable. Settlement in C. gasar and C. rhizophorae may also be year round (Afinowi, 1984;Nascimento, 1991;Boehs & Absher, 1996;Christo & Absher, 2006;Nalesso et al, 2008) but is usually greater and/or restricted to the dry, high salinity season (Sandison, 1966;Pereira et al, 1988;Alvarenga & Nalesso, 2006;Marques-Silva et al, 2006;Nalesso et al, 2008). Abundance and survival of larvae of C. rhizophorae and C. gasar are also greater when water temperatures are higher (Lemos et al, 1994;Christo & Absher, 2006).…”

“…Settlement of oysters has been recorded on an enormous array of artificial and natural substrates (Ajana, 1979;Afinowi, 1984;Gilles, 1992;Baker, 1997;Saoud et al, 2000;Devakie & Ali, 2002;Buitrago & Alvarado, 2005;Nalesso et al, 2008). Crassostrea larvae have been observed settling preferentially on both rough (Baker, 1997) and smooth (Crisp, 1967) surfaces of shells, for example.…”

“…For the commercial cultivation of oysters as well as for restoration efforts, spat collectors must be cost efficient. For commercial cultivation the product should also have a nice shape (Nalesso et al, 2008), but for the ecological restoration of flat oyster reefs the aesthetics of the oysters are not a priority. An efficient spat collector may therefore collect a large amount of spat over the spawning season without excess investment.…”
