Ozone disinfection for viruses with applications in healthcare environments: a scoping review

Abstract: The aim of this scoping review was to provide sufficient information about the effectiveness of ozone gas in virus inactivation of surfaces and objects under different environmental conditions. The review was performed according to the list of PRISMA SrC recommendations and the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis for Scoping Reviews. The review was registered in Open Science Framework (OSF). EMBASE (Ovid), Lilacs, LIVIVO, MEDLINE (PubMed), SciELO, Scopus and Web of Science were primary sources, and "gray literat… Show more

“…It can induce the oxidation of phospholipids and lipoproteins, leading to disruption of the integrity of the bacterial cell envelope [ 41 ]. The effectiveness of ozone in different virus types’ inactivation has also been confirmed [ 42 ]. In dentistry, one of the fields of using ozone includes removing the microorganisms from the oral cavity, as well as from dental unit waterlines and disinfection of dentures [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…In air, ozone tends to remain longer than in ordinary tap water with conventional bubbling. Half-lives between 20 and 50 min have been typically reported by different authors. ,, The application of catalytic ozone decomposition is commonly practised in several industries where spontaneous ozone decomposition is insufficient to meet the peculiar timelines of the process; activated carbon and manganese oxide are two popularly implemented catalysts for this purpose . Epelle et al.…”

“…Ozone can not only inactivate enveloped viruses by oxidizing their outer envelope but can also inactivate nonenveloped viruses by peroxidation of their outer proteins and thus impairing viral adhesion to host cells. Besides, the unsaturated fatty acids present in the lipid envelope could be oxidized by ozone, leading to destruction of single-stranded RNA. , …”
