P-081 The Use of Serial Wireless Capsule Endoscopy in Treatment Decisions to Improve Outcomes in Small Bowel Crohn’s Disease

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The role of wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) in small bowel Crohn's disease (SBCD) has been studied in many clinical trials and has been shown to be superior to other modalities (eg, barium radiography, colonoscopy with ileoscopy, computed tomography enterography, push enteroscopy) for diagnosing and evaluating non-stricturing SBCD. There has been debate, however, over the utility of SBCE findings for surveillance of mucosal healing and utilizing this data to adjust, individualize, and monitor a va… Show more

“…SBCE has been implemented in regular IBD surveillance and the assessment of the effects of medical management. Several studies have analyzed SBCE in detecting endoscopic lesions such as apthous ulcers and large ulcers and eventually evaluating MH . A prospective study of 40 patients with active CD evaluated three findings, that is, the number of large ulcers, apthous ulcers and length of time these lesions were visible .…”

“…In an abstract presented at the 2013 Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America meeting, Shafran et al [34] retrospectively evaluated whether mucosal healing defined by CE was critical in management decisions. Twenty-three patients were analyzed of which 17 achieved mucosal healing, determined by a single expert physician reader along with a Lewis score if available.…”
