P‐105: Array Printheads for the Ink Jet Fabrication of Color Polymer LEDs

Abstract: Many organizations developing color PLED displays have concluded that ink jet deposition of the light emitting polymers is the best approach to production. Manufacturing PLED face plates with ink jet printing will require multi‐orifice array ink jet printheads compatible with the polymer solutions.

“…Emissive display materials for flexible displays were widely reported at the 40 th Society of Information Display International Symposium, Seminar, and Exhibition. [2][3][4][5][6][7] Flexible organic light-emitting diodes (FOLEDs) have been demonstrated by researchers for both low-molecular-weight OLEDs 8 and polymer OLEDs. 6 Low-molecular-weight flexible OLEDs (FOLEDs) are vacuum deposited on a polyester substrate which can withstand both the manufacturing and considerable flexing with little depreciation of its display characteristics.…”

“…Polymeric OLEDs have been used to fabricate flexible PLEDs using ink-jet-printing methods. [3][4][5][6] One of the major remaining challenges in FOLED applications involves the necessity to isolate H 2 O and O 2 from the OLED material. A moisture barrier allowing less than 10 -5 g/m 2 /day of water is necessary to ensure a long life for the OLED.…”

“…To achieve this display of the future and the much-coveted paperless society, there are four key components: (1) high-contrast electro-optic display materials, preferably with low power-consumption and fast switching-speeds; (2) active-matrix technology for high-resolution applications;…”
