P.55: A Study of Optimal Viewing Distance in an AS3D Display

Abstract: Optimal Viewing Distance (OVD) is a basic and important auto‐stereoscopic 3D (AS3D) display characteristic. A number of studies, especially in the 3D display design and metrology fields, have mentioned this item for a long time. Unfortunately, there have been few theoretical and empirical studies on OVD. In this paper, we study OVD based on designer's formula, and geometrical and ray tracing approaches are applied to the simulation and measured data. We find that the OVD no more exist in practical cases, and w… Show more

“…Slight changes of viewing position along the horizontal directions were observed in the calculated results, which had been reported in the flat surface . Hence, once the parameters of the parallax barrier were initially determined by the given equations, optimization of the parameters through calculation of the ray trajectories might be also needed for autostereoscopic 3D using the curved surface.…”

“…In Fig. (c), the positions that the trajectories intersected were approximately located at the distance of 400 mm, although the intersected position was shorter for the larger horizontal distance from the user position . The distance of 400 mm was equal to the designed viewing distance of D = 400 mm.…”

“…[5] The purpose of this study is to investigate a fundamental evaluation metric of two-view type AS3D displays by VZ reconstruction based on geometry optics and ray-tracing simulations. Given a fixed optimum viewing distance (OVD) [6] and a fixed sub-pixel pitch (P D ), the peak luminance, crosstalk, screen uniformity, and motion luminance non-uniformity are discussed as measures of image quality of an autostereoscopic display, and the relationship between the various measures and the VZ is analyzed to provide design references. Furthermore, the barrier aperture ratio (a B ) and the subpixel aperture ratio (a D ) are the only control factors.…”
