“…In a fluid percussion model of concussion however, the late positive component in the cat (thought to be equivalent to the human P 3 ) was found to be suppressed for some time after the recovery of other neurological functions, including reflexes, motor co-ordination and the orienting response [DeSalles et al, 1987]. None the less, the first reports of late P 3 -like responses in small numbers of unresponsive patients appeared soon after, and its presence was anecdotally associated with a favourable prognosis in both traumatic [Reuter and Linke, 1989;Yingling et al, 1990] and non-traumatic coma [Gott et al, 1991]. A direct comparison between somatosensory EPs and P 3 ERPs showed the short-latency responses to be better predictors of a poor outcome, whilst the long-latency responses were useful predictors of awakening [DeGiorgio et al, 1993].…”
