“…A total of 1089 subjects (725 subjects in the control group and 364 subjects in the AD group, applying 2:1 ratio between groups) were estimated to enable a power of 80% and 5% type I error, to detect a difference of 2% in the prevalence of subjects with IBD between the AD and the control groups, assuming a prevalence of subjects with IBD of 2.4% for patients with AD and 0.4% in the control groups, respectively. These assumptions were based on an estimated 0.4% prevalence of IBD in Israel, 31 and a large Israeli database study 32 that found an overall 1.7% prevalence of IBD in AD, increasing for patients with severe AD to 3.1% (data not published). Approximately 70% of patients in our specialized AD clinic have moderate‐to‐severe AD, so we applied an estimated IBD prevalence of 2.4%.…”

“…Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are chronic gastrointestinal disorders affecting an estimated 1.5 million Americans, 2.2 million people in Europe, and several hundred thousand more worldwide 1 . In Israel, IBD incidence was reported to be 18.2 per 100 000 persons in 2016 and the prevalence of CD was 312.84 per 100 000 persons in the country's Jewish population 2 . In general, treatment of CD is complex and may include the use of 5‐aminosalicylates (5‐ASA), corticosteroids (CS), methotrexate, and other immunomodulators (IM), as well as biologic therapies.…”
