P86 Chest Drain insertion training; is Simulation training the answer?

Abstract: though 26/71(37%) reported that it aided communication. Most learned their behaviour from senior colleagues (22/76), own observation (16/76) or medical school (27/76). The closest associations were for Pictures C (77/78 responses, 99%¼normal) and E (94/ 102,92%¼wheeze/rhonchi combined). Crosses were commonly interpreted as crepitations in Pictures B (89/101,88%¼fine and bibasal combined) and F (66/94, 70%¼coarse). Pleural effusion was most commonly linked to Pictures A (35/107, 33%) and D (75/98, 77%) though b… Show more

“…It is possible that the COVID-19 pandemic, during which ICD insertion for pneumothorax was classified as an ‘aerosol generating procedure’, requiring enhanced personal protective equipment, may have contributed to the lack of opportunities over the study period. It is possible that the majority of our participants had not reached a “threshold” number of drain insertions which would maintain their confidence [ 44 ]. Studies exploring competence have suggested that the number of ICD insertions needed to gain and subsequently maintain competence may be between five and ten per year [ 3 , 44 ].…”

Studies exploring competence have suggested that the number of ICD insertions needed to gain and subsequently maintain competence may be between five and ten per year [ 3 , 44 ]. The trend within this dataset would suggest that approximately 4–6 may be the threshold to ameliorate confidence decay between sessions.…”
