“…An even more important concern is the high number of records of unidentified diphyllobothrid plerocercoids in teleosts (see the Parasite-Host list), because these metacestodes can infect humans who consume raw or undercooked fish and may cause a disease known as diphyllobothriosis (Scholz et al 2009; Kuchta et al 2015). Larval trypanorhynchs are the only exception, because they may be precisely identified based on their tentacular armature (Palm 2004; Caira and Jensen 2014).…”

“…Nas Américas há registros da doença nos Estados Unidos, Alasca, Canadá, Chile, Argentina, Peru, e mais recentemente no Brasil. Na América do Sul destaca-se a chamada "grande tênia do pacífico", Adenocephalus pacificus que chega a medir 10 m, sendo endêmica no Equador, Chile e Peru (Kuchta et al, 2015).…”

“…Although our patient only consumed raw locally caught marine fish, thus acquiring a patent infection after accidental ingestion of plerocercoids, the fish species concerned have yet to be confirmed as suitable intermediate hosts of A. pacificus tapeworms ( 1 ). These findings, and reports spanning >90 years, suggest that A. pacificus tapeworms are endemic in piscivorous mammals off the Australian coast, and more human cases can be expected as pressure on marine fish stocks and consumption of uncooked fish increase.…”
