Paclitaxel as Neoadjuvant Therapy for High Grade Angiosarcoma of the Spleen: A Brief Report and Literature Review

Abstract: Introduction:Splenic angiosarcoma is a rare tumor with only a few cases reported in the literature. Surgical resection offers the best chance of cure for this aggressive neoplasm but is often precluded by infiltration of the tumor to surrounding critical structures. We report a case of a locally advanced angiosarcoma rendered operable by treatment with Paclitaxel monotherapy.Case presentation:A 69 year old female presented with a high grade splenic angiosarcoma, considered inoperable due to the extent of local… Show more

“…14,16 On immunohistochemistry, neoplastic cells express Factor VIII-associated antigen and 2 or more markers of vascular differentiation such as CD34, CD31 and VEGFR3. 4,5,10,11 CD68 and lysozyme, known as histiocytic differentiation markers are often also expressed. 5 Angiosarcomas tend to display complex karyotypes and no consistent recurrent chromosomal abnormalities have been found.…”

“…Paclitaxel use had already been reported as an adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy by Vakkalanka and Milhem [24], suggesting that the unresectable tumor became resectable, thus improving survival with postoperative therapy. Our patient remained disease free for 1 year and 2 months after paclitaxel adjuvant chemotherapy.…”

“…In comparison to spontaneous tumors that have a median survival expectation of nearly 9 months, radiation induced AS are more resistant to paclitaxel treatment and have a median overall survival of less than 6 months (Penel et al 2008). Paclitaxel has also been used as a neoadjuvant therapy to decrease primary tumor size prior to surgery for splenic AS (Vakkalanka & Milhem 2010).…”
