Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula): Growth and Food of Young of the Year and a Suggested Technique for Measuring Length

Abstract: The mean total length of young-of-the-year paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) frown Lewis and Clark Lake (a main-ste•n Missouri River reservoir at the Nebraska-South Dakota border) was 215 •nm on 31 August of the first sramneT of life and estimated to be 296 •mn by the end of the first growing season; average growth rate was 2.7 mm/day. The diet in 1972 consisted of zooplankton and aquatic and terrestrial insects. Daphnia pulex was by far the most important food occurring in stomachs of all 79 fish 30-149 •mn long… Show more

“…For example, the ontogenetic switch from particulate feeding to suspension feeding that occurs in many planktivorous species may involve no change or a decrease in the average size of prey (Jansen 1976, Ruelle & Hudson 1977, Rosen & Hales 1981, Drenner et al . 1982, Mummert & Drenner 1986) .…”

“…Defined as a loose aggregative behavior, shoaling can be viewed as the forerunner to all vertebrate social groups; shoaling is engaged in by the majority of fishes as well as amphibian larvae, representing a broad swath of vertebrate diversity (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). Although shoaling provides benefits to individuals via enhanced predator avoidance and foraging efficiency, individuals constantly assess the costs and benefits of joining or remaining in a shoal relative to acting alone (2,5,10).…”

“…Upon contact with nets, fish were removed and brought on board the boat where length (eye-to-fork length (EFL); Ruelle and Hudson 1977) and weight were recorded, and sex noted during surgical implantation of transmitters (Ross and Kleiner 1982). We implanted radio transmitters into 69 adult paddlefish over the period April 1999 to September 2000: 25 during the spring (April 29-30) of 1999, 22 during the fall (September 30-October 5) of 1999, and 22 during the fall (September 27-28) of 2000.…”
