The article foregrounds Father Paulo Ricardo’s role in the political history of the present time and in the building of the political-religious guidelines that helped the shaping and mobilization of Jair Bolsonaro’s extreme rightwing project, from 2018’s candidacy to the presidency, but mainly in the face of time management of the Covid-19 pandemic. From the notion of Christofascism, as a “theology of authoritarian power,” one seeks to understand how the referred priest helps in intellectual production, hence sustaining the governmental summit mainly with the arrival of Covid-19 in the country. The article also seeks to use the notion of “trajectory” by Giovanni Levi to trace the last years of the priest’s religious activity, mainly from his productions on social media of political-religious appeal, when Father Paulo Ricardo directly feeds what we call Bolsonaro’s “Christofascism” with themes that help in the “war of the gods” promoted in this condition, in contempt for science and helping to feed this new type of authoritarianism experienced in contemporary Brazil.

The Roman Catholic Church in Latin America was crossed by numerous currents of political thought in the mid-twentieth century and early twenty-first century. A pivotal moment for the reconfiguration of the Catholic structure took place in the 1960s, with the movement of distension with modern values carried out by the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). From then onwards, we see the resurgence of movements more to the right, anti-modern in value, although they are present in modernity. What ideas and values are the symbolic vertebrae of these Catholic movements that see Catholic tradition as a stronghold under attack? The article intends to explore the hypothesis that these traditionalist movements and groups that emerged in the second half of the twentieth century, especially in conflict with the directives of Vatican II, have values and ideas loaded with religious pessimism and political reactionarism and reflect the complex relationships between Catholicism and modernity. Based on research in primary and secondary documental sources located in the historical-sociological epistemological horizon, it is intended to present an overview of these groups, some of them more institutionalized, others more diffuse, their distinct origins, and their convergence towards a religiously traditionalist perspective while it is politically reactionary.

O artigo pretende discutir as conexões entre grupos da direita católica no Brasil com redes e matrizes do mesmo tipo, externas e transnacionais. As informações mais conhecidas dão conta do papel jogado por grupos evangélico-pentecostais oriundos dos EUA nestes fluxos. Este artigo, contudo, busca chamar atenção para o alcance da influência católica no processo. Serão destacados como vetores desta relação os movimentos do Opus Dei e da Renovação Carismática Católica (RCC). No exame destas duas instâncias da Igreja Católica, o artigo levanta a hipótese de que existe de longa data um caráter internacional no seio do Catolicismo que implica numa globalização interna deste na contemporaneidade. Esta funciona de modo próprio, ainda que interaja com outras formas religiosas conservadoras e reacionárias como os grupos evangélico-pentecostais. Usamos metodologias qualitativo-interpretativas com base em bibliografia acadêmica tradicional não-exaustiva. Mas, por ser um tema ainda em ebulição, utilizamos, como complemento, fontes primárias e secundárias digitais e não digitais (discursos oficiais, jornais, vídeos e páginas eletrônicas).
