Paediatric solid tumours in Nigerian children: A changing pattern?

Abstract: Based on the result of our study, we conclude that the commonest solid malignancy of childhood in Jos, Nigeria is rhabdomyosarcoma. This has implications for diagnosis, management and prognosis of theses soft tissue sarcomas in our paediatric population.

The placing of Burkitt lymphoma as the third most common tumour in the review by Tanko et al 28 from Jos needs to be interpreted with caution bearing in mind that Burkitt Lymphoma is mostly diagnosed through cytology of fine needle aspirate and so the Jos study which was based on histology of solid tumours is likely to have an underrepresentation of Burkitt Lymphoma 17 .
