Paediatric sunburn: The experience of an Australian paediatric burns unit

Abstract: Larger-scale studies are warranted to further delineate the contributing factors and to identify the specific populations of children at risk of sunburn. Future educational programmes can therefore target these subgroups and behaviours for effective prevention of sunburn. Tailored campaigns that address these factors may be of greater impact in reducing hospital presentations and admissions of significant sunburn.

“…Similar high rates of sun burn were displayed by other studies in many countries (Jones et al, 2007;Cheng et al, 2010;Ergul et al, 2011;Kyle et al, 2014), whereas countries which have activated systematic awareness programs like Australia and USA , have better results (Larsman et al, 2012;Mah et al, 2013;Volkov et al, 2013). …”

“…The sun burn is a further risk factor of skin cancer developing. At least one episode of sun burn during the childhood increases 1.5-3 times the relevant risk of CM melanoma, whereas over than five sun burns reach the relative risk to 2-6 (Hall et al, 2001;Garbe and Leiter, 2009;Mah et al, 2013).…”

“…Researches have shown that this trend is becoming prevalent in Asian countries too (Ehrich, et al, 2014). Albeit studies in Asian countries, particularly in Malaysia are limited, Smith (2007), Iberahim, et al, (2013), Ting (2013, Mah and Ting (2013), Musa and Ting (2013);Ting, Musa and Mah (2014), Jansz and Sari (2015), Cheah (2015), Razali et al (2016), and Bava Harji, Chetty, Ismail and Letchumanan (2016) have provided evidence for plagiarism being equally rampant in non-English speaking countries. Thus, concurring with Adbolmohammadi and Baker (2007), "to combat this worrisome situation, it is important to investigate the variables that are associated with plagiarism": What are the students' attitudes towards plagiarism?…”

“…However, some patients with sunburns do present to and are managed in specialist burn services, typically as outpatients. This fact notwithstanding, there are still sunburn cases of sufficient severity and health impact that warrant inpatient treatment . There has not yet been a larger-scale study of patients with sunburn severe enough to warrant admission to specialist burn services across Australia and New Zealand.…”
