Pain Coping Profiles in Workers’ Compensation Clients with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: A Cluster Analysis

Abstract: This study investigated pain coping profiles using the Coping Strategies Questionnaire-24 (CSQ-24) in a sample of 171 workers’ compensation clients with chronic musculoskeletal pain from Canada. Cluster analysis identified three distinct coping profiles: mixed coping, catastrophising, and positive coping. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) results revealed that the positive coping group had lower levels of activity interference and depression as well as higher levels of quality of life than the mixed c… Show more

“…The inclusion of both affective and cognitive psychologic measures in this study encompasses a broader analysis of psychologic function than has previously been explored for shoulder surgery. The study findings support recent reports that both depression and catastrophizing are associated with higher levels of pain and disability in the shoulder [75] and other musculoskeletal conditions [7,61,65]. There were several limitations in this study.…”

“…The association of cognitive factors such as pain beliefs, catastrophizing, kinesiophobia, and self-efficacy with outcome after surgery has not been reported; however, one study has reported an association of affective and cognitive factors with shoulder pain [75]. Conceptual overlap between affective and cognitive factors has been reported in chronic musculoskeletal pain [65], low back pain [7,61], and knee osteoarthritis [15] and may reflect a level of general psychologic distress. Alternatively, there may be important distinctions between these two factors, as identified in a study by Rabey et al [61], in which people with chronic low back pain were grouped statistically (clustered) according to their individual pattern across a number of different measures of affective and cognitive psychologic functioning.…”

“…Women are more likely to have mental health problems and chronic pain than men (Breslau, 2002;Dahlhamer et al, 2018): marijuana can be used to treat symptoms associated with both of these conditions. These conditions, mental health problems and chronic pain, are commonly reported among individuals who claim WC (Sanchez et al, 2015;Schwatka et al, 2017;Schwatka et al, 2018).…”

“…Por su parte, Sanchez et al (2015) realizaron una investigación con 171 trabajadores con dolor crónico, e identificaron tres conglomerados: uno caracterizado por afrontamiento positivo, otro por catastrofización, y otro por afrontamientos mixtos. Hallaron que aquellos integrantes del grupo de afrontamiento positivo obtuvieron puntajes significativamente menores en sintomatología depresiva e interferencia de la actividad, y mayores puntuaciones de calidad de vida, en comparación con los otros dos grupos.…”
