Pain perception and efficacy of local analgesia using 2% lignocaine, buffered lignocaine, and 4% articaine in pediatric dental procedures

Abstract: Background The purpose of this study was to compare the pain perception and anesthetic efficacy of 2% lignocaine with 1:200,000 epinephrine, buffered lignocaine, and 4% articaine with 1:200,000 epinephrine for the inferior alveolar nerve block. Methods This was a double-blind crossover study involving 48 children aged 5–10 years, who received three inferior alveolar nerve block injections in three appointments scheduled one week apart from the next. Pain on injection wa… Show more

“…A total of seven RCTs fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in our review ( 11 - 17 ). Thirteen studies were excluded due to the following reasons: one study each for reporting duplicate data, not reporting relevant outcome, and comparing only IANB ( 18 ). Others were conducted only on adults ( 19 - 22 ) or were comparing only infiltration techniques ( 23 - 28 ).…”

“…Pain, an unavoidable component of many dental operations, is also one of the main causes of such dental operations [ 2 ]. Many treatments, particularly in pediatric dentistry, require local anesthesia to manage pain [ 3 ]. The paradox of this scenario is that local anesthetics, which are the best medications for alleviating and avoiding pain, are also associated with pain [ 4 ].…”

“…Pain is an inevitable factor during various dental procedures and is one of the major reasons for fear of dental treatment in children. The use of local anesthesia for pain control is a requisite for many procedures, especially in pediatric dentistry [ 1 ]. Despite considerable improvements in local anesthetic delivery, injection needle pain remains a common concern, especially in children.…”
