Painless osteoid osteoma in the maxilla of an elderly female patient

Abstract: Osteoid osteoma is an osteoblastic benign bone tumor more frequent in long bones of young male patients. It is the third most commonly diagnosed benign bone tumor and has distinctive symptomatology, nocturnal pain that relieves with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Nowadays, total resection is the preferred management. In the present paper, an unusual variant in the maxilla of a female elderly patient without previous symptomatology is exposed; it was surgically removed without signs of reappearance in 12… Show more

“…Radiolucency with central calcification, located in the cortical bone with surrounding sclerotic bone, is the characteristic feature of osteoid osteoma [ 3 ]. The present case was observed in the maxillary anterior region, which is quite uncommon comparing with previously cited cases [ 2 , 4 , 10 , 13 40 ]. However, in dentistry, such cases could be underdiagnosed since such a small lesion can be missed on a panoramic radiograph because of the complex anatomic site of the jaws, and CT or CBCT is a useful imaging modality for this diagnosis [ 3 , 30 ].…”

“…Since the original descriptions of osteoid osteoma were first published, 31 examples of isolated osteoid osteoma arising in the jawbones have been reported in the English-language literature until September 2019 [ 2 , 4 , 10 , 13 40 ]. OO is seen in less than 1% of jawbones [ 2 ].…”

“…Osteoid osteoma is more frequent in adolescents and young adults, with the peak of incidence being between 20 and 30 years of age. Typically, it is more common in male than female subjects [3]. This benign bone tumor is characterized by an excessive formation of unmineralized bone matrix, called osteoid.…”
