Pairing and aggregation of Amblosoma suwaense (Trematoda: Brachylaimidae) metacercariae in vitro and partial characterization of lipids involved in chemo-attraction

Abstract: SUMMARYHistochemical and thin-layer chromatographic (t.l.c.) analyses were made on neutral lipids in the free (unencysted) metacercariae of Amblosoma suwaense (Brachylaimidae). As determined by t.l.c. the major neutral lipid fractions in metacercariae removed directly from Campeloma decisum snails were free sterols and sterol esters. Metacercariae incubated for 1 h at 37±1° C in sterile Locke's solution released mainly sterol esters and a lesser amount of free sterols into the medium. As determined by Oil Red … Show more

“…Pairing of Echinostoma revolutum adults in vitro was observed by Fried, Tancer & Fleming (1980) and the chemoattractant again identified as a free sterol. Similar pairing was noted by adults of Amblosoma suwaense but the chemoattractant was found to be a sterol ester rather than a free sterol (Fried & Robinson, 1981). Imperia, Fried & Eveland (1980) observed significant attraction of female S. mansoni to 1-male sources in vitro but not to a 3-male source.…”

“…Our E-S analysis of H. medioplexus is in agreement with previous studies (Fried &Gioscia, 1976;Fried & Shapiro, 1975;Fried etal. 1980;Fried & Robinson, 1981), which indicated that sterol is a major lipid fraction released by flukes into a non-nutrient medium. The role of sterols in interspecific trematode pairing needs further study.…”

“…Recent studies have demonstrated intraspecific pairing in vitro of Leucochloridiomorpha constantiae (Fried & Roberts, 1972), Echinostoma revolutum (Fried, Tancer & Fleming, 1980) and of Amblosoma suwaense (Fried & Robinson, 1981). Interspecific pairing in vitro has been reported by Fried & Jacobs (1980) matching E. revolutum against either Zygocotyle lunata or L. constantiae.…”
