Palaeo-environmental evolution of Central Asia during the Cenozoic: new insights from the continental sedimentary archive of the Valley of Lakes (Mongolia)

Abstract: Abstract. The Valley of Lakes basin (Mongolia) contains a unique continental sedimentary archive, suitable for constraining the influence of tectonics and climate change on the aridification of Central Asia in the Cenozoic. We identify the sedimentary provenance, the (post)depositional environment and the palaeo-climate based on sedimentological, petrographical, mineralogical, and (isotope) geochemical signatures recorded in authigenic and detrital silicates as well as soil carbonates in a sedimentary successi… Show more

“…unit cell and atomic parameters, mineral crystallinity, particle size, stress and strain, specimen porosity and absorption properties, preferred particle orientation, as well as geometry, configuration and beam geometry of the XRD device). Mineral identification and quantification were carried out using the PANalytical HighScore Plus software package and pdf‐4 database at an analytical uncertainty of <3 wt% (Baldermann et al ., 2021).…”

“…Addressing the 'dolomite problem', research has focused on identifying the key factors that allow for overcoming the kinetic barriers which prevent the incorporation of magnesium ions (Mg 2+ ) into calcium carbonate minerals (CaCO 3 ) to form (proto)dolomite (e.g. Arvidson & Mackenzie, 1999;Petrash et al, 2017;Bontognali, 2019;Kell-Duivestein et al, 2019;Baldermann et al, 2020;Pina et al, 2022). In particular, the presence of microbes (e.g.…”

“…Secondary electron (SE) images were acquired on a ZEISS DSM 982 Gemini scanning electron microscope (SEM) (ZEISS, Jena, Germany) operated at an accelerating voltage of 3-5 kV for microstructural characterization of the GP and Cu-GP samples. Representative material was prepared on SEM stubs, fixed with double-sided carbon (C) tape and subsequently C-coated to reduce charging [45]. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) data were acquired on selected single spots using 15 kV accelerating voltage and subsequently used for mineral identification and quantification of the Cu content of the GP matrices.…”
