Paleobiology and philosophy

Abstract: I offer four ways of distinguishing paleobiology from neontology, and from this develop a sketch of the philosophy of paleobiology. I then situate and describe the papers in the special issue Paleobiology and Philosophy, and reflect on the value and prospects of paleontology-focused philosophy.

“…This section provides a case study in paleobiology illustrating the conditions needed for the problem of unequal evidence to arise in practice. For our purposes, paleobiology is a field that studies evolutionary changes on large time scales using fossil and other data sources (Currie 2019). The field has been an emerging focus for philosophers studying underdetermination in practice, with a number of recent studies examining data models (Bokulich 2018), fossil specimen preparation (Wylie 2019), and testing hypotheses about evolutionary events (Cleland 2001;Turner 2011).…”

“…Thus, it is taken from a so-called neontological discipline. In biological and philosophical literature, "neontologists" are biologists who deal with living organisms (e.g., Currie 2019, Depew and Simpson 2006, Sepkoski 2012, Gould 1980. Conversely, paleontologists work and investigate extinct and fossilized plants and animals.…”
