Three main domestic species have been used for leather and parchment making: domestic sheep Ovis aries, domestic goat Capra hircus and domestic cow Bos taurus. Species markers that discriminate the three species are shown in SM Tables 1 to 3 for respectively Collagen Type I alpha-1 (collagen alpha-1(I)), Type I alpha-2 (collagen alpha-2(I)), and Type III alpha-1 (collagen alpha-1(III)). Collagen alpha-1(I) is the most conserved of the three chains and thus has the least markers to discriminate the three species. 1. Peptide markers from collagen alpha-1(I) identified using a FDR of 1% for peptide spectrum matches. C is for Capra hircus, O is for Ovis aries and B is for Bos taurus. *marks when one or multiple unique species peptides were identified. ps is for poor spectrum/poor score (not counted); mc is for missed cleavage
