Paleoproterozoic Cordilleran-Type Tectonics in central West Greenland

Abstract: <p>A new tectonic model is presented to explain the tectonostratigraphic evolution of the Paleoproterozoic Karrat Group in central West Greenland and the polyphase deformation, magmatism and metamorphism in the Rinkian orogen recorded in Paleoproterozoic rocks and Archaean complexes. The Karrat Group (from c. 71°00’ to 73°00’ N) formed in an intra-cratonic sag basin after c. 2000 Ma with basal quartzites of the Qaarsukassak and Mâ… Show more

“…The timing for the thrust stacking is not constrained by geochronology data but presumably postdates the Rinkian metamorphism that is dated 1830-1800 Ma [4]. The ore body was probably remobilized along the axial plane of the parasitic fold [8] during this time.…”

“…The lower units formed in an intracratonic sag basin as the Rae Craton subsided. The basin progressively evolved through an intracratonic rift stage, with associated volcanism and syn-rift siliciclastic sedimentation between 1950 and 1900 Ma [13], to a later stage back-arc geodynamic setting [4].…”
