Palladium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Allylic Amination Using Ferrocenyl Pyrazole Ligands:  Steric Control of η3-Allyl Configuration and Site-Selective Nucleophilic Attack

Abstract: The reaction of 1,3-diphenylallylethyl carbonate (1) with benzylamine to afford the secondary amine 2 is effectively catalyzed by Pd-complexes containing chiral ferrocenyl pyrazole ligands. The highest enantioselectivity (99% ee) was obtained using ligand 3a, 1-{(S)-1-[(R)-2-(diphenylphosphino)ferrocenyl]ethyl}-3-(1-adamantyl)-1H-pyrazole. Four different cationic Pd-allyl intermediates, 4a, 4c, 4j, and 4k (containing ligands 3a, 3c, 3j, and 3k, respectively), formed during the catalytic reaction were studied i… Show more

“…The proposal that nucleophilic attack occurs in an S N 2Ј fashion with inversion is consistent with the well documented mechanism of palladium -allyl chemistry (73)(74)(75)(76) and the proposed mechanism of rhodium-catalyzed reactions of allylic carbonates put forward by Evans (12). The proposal that the alkoxide moiety directs the nucleophilic attack by shifting the position of the metal on the allyl fragment has precedent in the chemistry of palladium where neighboring groups have been found to exert this type of directing influence (77,78).…”

“…This is caused by the larger trans influence exerted by P relative to N, thereby rendering the carbon atom trans to phosphorus more electrophilic. [14,[19][20][21][22] Other bidentate PÀN ligands, such as planar, chiral ferrocenyl derivatives, have also been successfully employed, with high regio-and stereoselectivities. [23] The number of chiral monodentate ligands that have been studied in palladium-catalysed asymmetric allylic transformations is rather limited.…”

“…During the last decade, a series of pyrazole-based ligands have been used for catalytic applications [1][2][3]. However, chiral pyrazole ligands derived from camphor coordinated to transition metals and the catalytic applications of the latter have been less explored [4].…”
