Palladium-promoted benzothiophene condensation in NS2ligands

Abstract: The reaction of 2,6-bis(o-methoxycarbonylphenylthiomethyl)pyridine with PdCI2 or Ru(Me2SO)6( BF& in methanol produces a tridentate non-symmetrical ligand incorporating the benzothiophene fragment.

“…The two five-member chelate rings involving the metallic atom are almost coplanar. The Pd−Pd distances (Pd(1)−Pd(2) = 3.341(3) Å and Pd(3)−Pd(4) = 3.330(2) Å) and the Pt−Pt distances (Pt(1)−Pt(2) = 3.3218(4) Å and Pt(3)−Pt(4)= 3.3205(4) Å) indicate no direct bond between the metallic atoms, but a very weak interaction can be postulated in agreement with the reported values for polynuclear complexes with Pd or Pt, a Pd 4 core (2.549(2)−3.539(1) Å) and 2.537(1)-3.507(1) Å platinum complexes . A similar ring disposition has been described in palladium complexes with amido and in palladium and platinum complexes with 2-(1-naphthyl)benzothiazoline as ligands.…”

“…Recent studies in our group were focused to the synthesis of new ligands incorporating the NS 2 (pyridinedithia) coordinating unit. Interest in such coordinating systems stems in their potential as sensitizers in ion selective electrodes, as carriers in supported liquid membranes and in the interesting reactivity with metals, e.g., benzothiophene condensations promoted by Pd(II) and Pt(II) for appropriate NS 2 ligands, as 2,6-bis(2‘-methoxycarbonylphenylthiomethyl)pyridine, represented in Figure . On the other hand, carboranyl compounds have found applications as electrolytes for nonaqueous solvents or in solvent extraction of radionuclides .…”

“…The ratio of the two species was estimated by the integrated intensity of the peaks in the 1 H{ 11 B} NMR spectrum. Method I yields 64% of 2a and 37% of 2b, whereas 40% of 2a and 60% of 2b are achieved using 8,9,25 The signal at −1.81 ppm is a tetraplet ( 1 J BH = 106 Hz) and the others are broad signals. When the 1 H{ 11 B} NMR spectrum was recorded, the broad resonances at −3.27 and −6.55 ppm were shown to be doublets due to coupling to 31 The 1 H{ 11 B} and 31 P{ 1 H} resonances (see Fig.…”
